Focus on positive intervention and peer enforcement, developing protocols for campus community members to respectfully ask others to comply and/or report noncompliance.
Form an implementation team to develop a communication plan; include key administrators, faculty, staff, student leaders, and community health organizations.
Communicate the new policy through channels such as e-mails, media releases, or college newsletters.
Use all of the tools of communication, such as social media, newsletters, the campus newspaper and announcements in publications at athletic events, commencement exercises, and other campus activities to publicize and promote cooperation with the policy.
Include the policy in student and staff handbooks, in vendor contracts, and on the college website.
Create an informative, user‐friendly web page about the policy, its adoption, and its implementation.
Post prominent, strategically located smoke-free signage campus signs and decals (provided by BCBS)
Use portable signage, table tents, etc., to ensure visitor compliance at campus events.
Create policy reminder cards that include the rationale for the policy and a number to call with questions or for more information.
Remove all ashtrays and butt receptacles from campus.
Promote the campus as smoke-free in college marketing materials.
Include in our communications and on policy reminder cards smoking cessation resources such as the Longest Student Health Center and the Tobacco Quit Line, 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
Award recognition to those who support and further implementation of the policy.
